Ethics Brave New World #2

In Brave New world Aldous Huxley shows many examples as to what the future would be like and how it would affect us as a population. The top 3 ethical issues would be soma, recreational sex and genetic engineering which we have now in the modern world. Some of these issues we can see today and it is just like in Brave New World.

In Brave New World Soma is a drug that basically hides you from reality. It is a drug that cover ups any emotion and is taken to control the people. In the text it says "Euphoric, narcotic, pleasantly hallucinant." Many drugs that we have today can make you feel like this such as LSD and marijuana that give you a high and temporarily make you feel better and forget about the real world. Another ethical issue would be generic engineering where humans are created in labratories and are conditipned to have some type of deformality. In Brave New World it says "over the main entrance the words CENTRAL LONDON HATCHERY AND CONDITIONING CENTRE, and in a shield, The World States motto COMMUNITY, IDENTITY, STABILITY." This is similar to todays world where couples that cannot concieve naturally can get a test tube baby implanted and give birth to a baby through means of their genetic make-up even now we have scientist who are trying to clone animals.
Lastly another ethical problem would be recreational sex. In Brave New world it says that "We had elementary sex for the first time forty minutes." I want to relate this to todays world where very young girls are having sex and sex to many people is a sacred thing. Doing it for recreation is really odd and is frowned upon.
In conclusion the three ehtical problems that i talked about were soma, genetic engineering, and recreational sex. These are all ehtical issues that Aldous in a way predicted and they are currently happening now they just have different names.

Reflection #5

Quarter 3 was of of the most challenging quarters for me. I felt as though i was stuck in between two walls and could not get it out. The reason for this was because i was absent most of the time and had a lot of annotations/reading to do. I would stay up many nights making sure i had everything correct and completed. This was one of my favorite quarters due to the book Brave New World which really pushed me to think about the world differently. In the end it turned out to be okay.

PROMPT

In quarter 3 i learned how to manage my time and speak up for myself. In ap lang i learned that in Brave New World things that go on in the book are not much different than the world we live in considering the fact that this book was written 50 years ago which is very odd to me. My learning goals as of now is to prepare for the exam in may and hopefully score high. The most meaningful assignment we did was the quiz we took that were practice questions it made me realize how much i need to study and prepare for.
